There is no age at which you have to stop wearing bold lipstick, glitter or winged liner. But skin does get drier and texture changes over time, and the products that worked at 25 can start to sit differently. These small swaps are about comfort and glow, not rules.
1. Prep matters more than ever
Makeup looks best on hydrated skin. Moisturise, then give it a few minutes to absorb before sunscreen and base. A dedicated primer is optional; a good moisturiser often does the same job.
2. Go lighter on the base
Heavy, matte foundation can settle into fine lines. Try a skin tint, a lighter foundation or simply concealer where you need it, pressed in with fingertips or a damp sponge.
3. Swap powders for creams
Cream blush, bronzer and highlighter melt into the skin rather than sitting on top. Apply blush slightly higher on the cheekbones and blend upwards for a lifted look.
4. Powder only where you need it
If you shine, use a fine translucent powder just on the centre of the face. Leave the cheeks dewy.
5. Define your brows
Brows often thin with age, and softly filling them in frames the whole face. Use light, hair-like strokes with a pencil or powder one shade lighter than your hair, then set with a clear or tinted gel.
6. Rethink eyeliner
Smudging a soft brown or grey pencil close to the upper lash line, then blending it, gives definition without a harsh line. Tightlining — applying liner along the upper waterline — makes lashes look fuller.
7. Line your lips
A lip liner close to your natural lip colour stops lipstick from feathering into fine lines around the mouth. Then wear whatever colour makes you feel good — including red.
The best makeup at any age is the one that makes you look like yourself on a really good day.
